Some conditions or life experiences may impact on the function or appearance of people’s genitals.
Congenital abnormalities, injury, gender dysphoria, or diseases such as lichen sclerosis may all have a profound effect on genital function, self-esteem and quality of life.
The reasons for seeking genital reconstruction may vary and can include conditions such as Peyronie’s disease, hypospadias, phimosis, buried penis, urethral stricture disease, lymphoedema, among others.
There are different types of genital reconstruction surgery depending on the specific condition being treated.
We welcome you to request an appointment and we can discuss your individual needs.
We have extensive experience, understanding and care when it comes to these types of surgery and the issues involved.
Scrotectomy is the surgical removal of the scrotum, which may be performed together with orchidectomy.
Vaginoplasty is a gender affirming genital procedure to construct female appearing genitals including a vaginal cavity. The procedure involves using the skin of the penis to create a cavity. It is performed together with a bilateral orchidectomy.
Requirements for vaginoplasty/labioplasty include relevant WPATH documents from 2 separate specialists, active private health insurance (>12 months coverage) as well as a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or less.
Phalloplasty is a surgical procedure to create or reconstruct a penis and is typically performed on transgender men or individuals with congenital anomalies. The procedure involves multiple complex procedures using tissue from the patient’s own body, to create a penis. While Dr Blecher has trained in phalloplasty, this procedure is not yet being offered.”
This latest version of vaginoplasty aims to increase the depth of the cavity, by incorporating some of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). It requires a minimally invasive key-hole robotic approach to the abdomen, combined with utilisation of the penile skin, to form the vaginal cavity. It is of value in cases where there is limited penile tissues. We currently offer this approach in addition to penile inversion vaginoplasty.
Buried penis can be a very embarrassing chronic condition. Many men experiencing buried penis have excess abdominal or pubic fat, but not everyone is necessarily overweight. Sometimes, people may have local skin conditions which interfere with the penile position.
While it can be difficult to treat, some people may be candidates for certain un-burying procedures. Buried penis surgery aims to correct the appearance and function of a penis that is buried under the skin. During the surgery, the excess fat and diseased skin are removed, the local skin is compressed to enable the penis to sit in a more exposed position.
It is important to understand that genital reconstruction surgery is a complex and delicate procedure that requires specialised training and expertise. It is essential to consult with a specialist urologist with extensive experience in performing genital reconstruction surgery to determine the most appropriate type of surgery for your individual needs.
